I Showed This Video To My Friend Who Smokes And She Quit The Next Day

Everyone is well aware of the health risks of smoking, but those who have a regular smoking habit often have a hard time kicking it. After an eye-opening experience, a man was able to quit his pack-a-day habit the same day. All it took was watching a video to help him quit for good. The video, uploaded by North Carolina nurse Amanda Eller, showed a comparison of the lungs of a smoker and those of a healthy person.

The black, cancer-ridden lungs of the person who smoked a pack a day for 20 years looked frightening enough when compared to the vibrant red, healthy lungs. By appearance alone, that might be enough to curb anyone’s smoking habit, but what happened next was beyond illuminating.

Each set of lungs was inflated to illustrate how well a person could breathe, depending on lung health. Notice the red lungs inflate fully and deflate, while the black lungs fail to properly inflate.

According to a report from the Daily Mail: “Smoking raises a person’s risk of developing lung cancer by approximately 23 times and is responsible for 87 percent of all related deaths.”

A woman’s voice is heard explaining, while attempting to inflate the unhealthy lungs: “Because these lungs are COPD, cancerous lungs, the elastance (the ability to rebound after being stretch during inhalation) is gone, so they will stretch out but then the recoil of them just snaps right back.” As a result, unhealthy lungs have to work harder to bring in enough air, which will leave the person feeling breathless.

Many people weighed in with comments on the Daily Mail’s coverage of the video, with one person noting: “Urgh. Absolutely revolting. Why any person would continue to do this knowing what it does to you, just completely baffles me. (And btw – I am a former heavy smoker, but I saw the light and quit. Thank goodness!)”

Another commenter shared this frightening perspective: “I work in a respiratory department where we set up old smokers with ventilators to stop them from dying in their sleep. Keeps them going for the last five years of their miserable lives whilst they rely on supplemental oxygen whenever they want to leave the house. You may think you’re doing no harm but it will catch up with you and your final years will be difficult and frightening. I’ve never had a patient who said they’d do it all again.”

Others, however, tried to reason, noting that we all die eventually, with one commenter sharing: “Seems to me that it doesn’t matter if you smoke or not, you will end up dead one way or another. For example, the healthy lungs belong to someone who didn’t smoke and despite that, they are still dead. The moral of the story is enjoy life and do what makes you happy, you never know what might kill you.”

Another commenter countered that argument, noting: “So many ‘something will get you in the end’ comments. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable and premature death and 30% of cancer deaths. On average, smokers live 10 years less. Life is all about choices and choosing to be a slave to a pointless addiction that makes you smell and kills you and others is a stupid choice. Ask any smoker with emphysema or cancer agonizingly gasping their last breaths on a hospital ward with their loved ones sitting around them.”
